03. Oscar, the trainer of dragons

Tags:

Oscar was a kids’ football coach at FC Sant Just. He discovered his passion for football much earlier when he was one of the fastest boys on the pitch, achieved by speed training at Sant Just Athletics Club.

He absolutely flew with the ball and it was fantastic watching him play. This passion, added to his dedication as a kids’ coach, helped him last year to dedicate an end-of-season chronicle for the Benjamín A team of FC Sant Just. With absolute humility, because he only shared it with the families of the team, he wrote the following words. Both for the pride of their families and for the boys themselves, it has an immeasurable value; for the self-esteem, admiration and dedication of those children, those dragons.

Below you can read what he said to each of the players at the end of last year’s season. If you had to choose which one of them was the best… you wouldn’t know which one to choose. It was Oscar’s love and passion for his children, for his team, that allowed him to elevate each of them, extolling all their qualities and their characters. These words alone show the type of person he was and shows how the togetherness was formed between each boy and between the entire team.

“Well, I don’t know where to start, I guess by thanking each and every one of the people who have been part of this incredible team which I have enjoyed both in good and in bad times, and without doubt the best moments will stay with me always. This year has been the year where I have enjoyed this great sport the most, and it was crowned with the Creixell tournament, a tournament that I will never forget and that has generated so many emotions within me. This is the reason why I wanted to write a few words to each of the boys.

First of all, Bruno, without whom nothing would have been possible. I have a thousand memories of you that I will never forget and I have had an amazing time with you. You have helped me in many things this year and I have learned a lot from you even though you have been training for the same length of time as me. I have had a great time and I hope to continue with you next year.

Alex: The guardian angel every coach wants to have, constant work with your sense of humour, undoubtedly the ribbon in your hair giving you the finishing touch of being the best goalkeeper in the league. I will never forget your semifinal in the tournament and even less the hug we gave each other when we knew we had made it to the final. Leaving aside the football, I have lived incredible moments with you which I will keep in a place in my heart. I hope to continue having my guardian angel next year.

Jorge: Your work during the year has been a constant improvement, without a doubt your level has increased enormously and we are very happy with your progress, keep working like this on everything! You had a 10/10 tournament that few people expected and when you played it you did incredibly well. Every workout with a smile on your face and trying your best, training you has been a pleasure.

Lars: You are special and difficult to define. You started the season playing on the wing and finished being practically the owner of the midfield, moving around the pitch without getting tired at all and surprising everyone who saw you play. By adapting to midfield your progress has increased a lot and you have been one of the players who has grown the most. I hope to see you next year dominating Benjamin A.

Rayan: Unfortunately, you’ve been very unlucky this year, but the little time you have played you have played 10/10. Constant work and improvement and I am so very proud of your work during the whole year. Keep up that cheerful attitude and it will take you far!

Manuel: Let me tell you Manuel, of all the players, I see myself reflected in you when I was your age. I’ve always tried to give you the best advice and help you as much as I can. Your progress has been excellent throughout the year and I am very happy to see how far you have come. I hope to have you next year if everything goes well.

Marc: Definitely the most underrated player in the squad, someone told me about you, identifying you with the saying «small but tough». This defines you perfectly. Training you has been a luxury, always learning from the advice and improving little by little. I’d like to see you next to Lars dominating the midfield next year in the Benjamin team!

Quebena: The life and soul of the party of the Benjamins. Many call you the “Pepe Reina” of the team and they are not wrong! You are a player who makes everyone happy that knows you. You’ve improved throughout the year and I’m so proud of you, although if you learned to pay attention a little more to explanations, you’d be the best. We’ll see you soon Quebenita!!

Biel: Biel, always working in silence and improving little by little. I remember I could not see your first goal and I was really upset to miss it, but luckily you scored more goals and I could see them all. Keep working – that’s the path to follow Biel!

Aniol: The best midfielder in the league and I am not exaggerating anything by saying this. Aniol you’re the player who has improved the most in the team throughout the year, I remember many training sessions where you took both Bruno and me to the limit, but the weekend came and you had the best game of the season. You’ve left me speechless many times and I don’t know when the day will come when you get tired in a game. Your tournament in Creixell stands out because it was really brutal, even when the team could not give any more, you pulled them along single handed, giving the team a final push. It was a pity that you were not able to play the semifinal – we would not have suffered so much. I hope to see you grow over the following years wherever you go, I will certainly be watching your progress.

Mario: Mario, the team’s killer. I remember the match against Terlenka where you scored your first hat-trick which was the beginning of a scoring streak that never ended. I can’t imagine how much you’ve improved. I have really liked training you Mario. When you learn to shoot hard, you’ll be the best striker in whichever team you are in.

Martí: Martí, you have undoubtedly been the one with whom I have established the best bond, you are the same introvert that I was and that’s why we got on so well. The maximum league goal scorer and possibly of the whole third division, an achievement that few could have achieved. Martí is the player that any coach would like to have, which has been proven over and over because you were always called to play for other categories. Your goal in the semifinal of the tournament was the icing on the cake, I had never cried for a goal as much as the one you scored. I look forward to seeing your progress through these years and I have no doubt that I will be there to see it.

Eric: My captain, the soul of the team, the rock of this Benjamín team, the person who made me scream for a goal more than Iniesta’s in the World Cup, that header against Atletico will be a beautiful moment that I will always remember. You’re a challenge no doubt, your strong attitude is not easy to manage and that is why I am glad to see how you have changed during the year. Many doubted Bruno and I when we gave you the captaincy at the beginning of the season, but at no time did we have any doubt because we knew that if someone had to carry the team, it was you. Your tournament was the example of progression of an entire year of constant work. I cannot express in words the pride that I have after seeing your progress Eric, it certainly proved that you have easily enough ability to play at a high level. You are the captain many coaches would like to have, thank you for helping us to create an idyllic environment in the team.

Finally, of course, thank you very much to all the parents for this year. In September I couldn’t have imagined being where we are now. You are all my second family and I will never forget you, I take the best of each of you. Without doubt, it has been the best footballing year of my life.

Such a waste! There are no words to say how much It hurts to have lost him.

“This shows true passion for life, for what he did and for the emotion in everything he did. With each anecdote and with each story Oscar is teaching us that we are capable of giving so much more than we do. We should enjoy life and get up every morning wishing to give life a smile, because he can no longer do it. So, we have this privilege and I would almost say the obligation to choose how we want to start each and every day”.
